You said the word and the room made a noise.
Not a discussion. A noise. Somebody groaned, somebody else said do we have to, and one of them did not look up at all, which was somehow the worst of the three.
And you said fine, never mind, in the voice people use when it is not fine, and that was the last time you suggested it.
That was months ago. Possibly longer. And what has happened since is not that you decided to stop offering. It is that offering became a thing with a cost attached, and the cost went up every time, and eventually you stopped paying it without ever making a decision about it.
I want to look at what you concluded, because I think you concluded too much from one noise.
You heard the groan and you took it as a verdict: they do not want to spend time with me. And that is an enormous thing to take from a sound a nine year old makes about their shoes.
Because here is what a groan usually is. It is the first response, made in a warm room, by somebody comfortable, to a suggestion that involves moving. It is almost never a considered position about you.
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock
There is a picture of how God approaches a person who is not answering, and what is remarkable about it is how little force is in it.
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20, King James Version)
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.
He is outside. He is knocking. The door is shut and He does not open it.
That is the arrangement, and it is worth sitting with for a moment, because it is not what most people assume about God. He has every capacity to come through that door and He does not use it. He stands, and He knocks, and He waits, and the opening belongs entirely to the person inside.
And notice He does not go away either. The knocking continues. That is the position: not forcing, not leaving.
There is your model for a doorway inside your own house. Standing and knocking is not weakness and it is not giving up. It is the posture the Lord Himself takes with people He loves and could compel.
You are able to keep knocking without forcing anything, and heaven has never once treated that as a weak position. Revelation 3:20 has the one with all authority standing outside a shut door, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a model rather than a disappointment.
Their no is not about you
Here is the thing I want to take off you, because you have been carrying it and it is heavier than the situation deserves.
When they groan, they are not evaluating you.
They are nine, or fourteen, and they are warm, and they were in the middle of something, and going out requires standing up. The groan is about the standing up. It arrives before any thinking has happened, and it would arrive if the offer came from anybody.
But you have been receiving it as data about your relationship. And once that happened, offering became risky, because every offer was a small test of whether your family wants you, and nobody wants to run that test on a Tuesday.
That is why you stopped, and it was not weakness either. You stopped protecting yourself from a verdict you were reading into a noise.
You are not being rejected, and a groan has never once been a report on what your children think of you. The written word shows the knocking continuing at a door that has not opened, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a first reaction from a relationship.
Offer once, and go with whoever comes
So here is the assignment, and the second half is where the whole thing turns.
Suggest it once this week. And go even if only one of them comes.
Once. Not three times, and no persuading. You say it plainly, you accept whatever answer arrives, and you do not follow it up with a speech about how we never do anything as a family.
And then you go. With one of them, or on your own if that is what happens.
Going with one is not a consolation prize and it is not a failure of the outing. It is the actual thing. Two people walking is a real event, and it is often better than four, and the one who came did not come out of duty because there was no pressure to respond to.
And here is what happens over time and I am not promising it. Sometimes the ones who did not come start asking where you went. Not always. But an invitation that has no weight attached to it is a very different object from one that costs something to refuse.
Revelation 3:20 has the knocking continue without the door being forced, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a parent who offers and lets the answer stand.
You are able to offer without attaching a weight to it, and it has never once required anybody to come for the offering to be worth doing. Revelation 3:20 keeps the one outside knocking rather than compelling, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a parent walking out with one child or none.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who stopped asking.
You are not being turned down as a person, and a noise made in a warm room has never once been a verdict on your family. I am not promising you that they come and I am not giving you a way to get them out. Revelation 3:20 says behold, I stand at the door, and knock, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a year of quiet self protection off a parent.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are allowed to keep offering, and their groan has never once been a final answer about anything. The written word puts the one with all the authority outside a shut door, knocking, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a dignified place to stand in your own kitchen.
Ask once this week. Go with whoever comes.
Declare this over yourself
- Noise this room makes when I suggest it, you are not a verdict on me. Revelation 3:20 says behold, I stand at the door, and knock, so by the Holy Spirit I offer once this week and I let the answer stand in the name of Jesus.
- Conclusion that my children do not want to be with me, you were read off a groan and you were never true. The word keeps the one with all authority outside, knocking, and by the Holy Spirit I am done arranging my week around not being refused.
- Father, You stand at a shut door and You do not open it Yourself. Your word says behold, I stand at the door, and knock, so by Your Spirit I keep the invitation open, and I go with whoever comes, and I do not make it cost them anything to say no.
